I am a man who has gone on a
journey. Years ago I believed that homosexuality was a damnable sin because it
said so in 1 Corinthians 6:9. And I thought Christians should not chicken out
regarding the scripture. It is not love to keep one’s mouth shut when you see
another in danger of hell. On the other hand at our yearly church meetings I
would go and talk with persons who were gay and could not see anything wrong
with them. This put me in a difficult place. I thought everyone should be in

With the recent teen suicide related to bullying and the recent anti-gay campaign by a local church, I am reminded of the reason it is important to spread love. A local church is spreading the message that “being gay is NOT a gift from God.” I wonder if they are aware of who may really be reading this billboard. I wonder if they considered the idea that a young person who is facing coming out is reading this sign. This sign is reinforcing the message that so many young people are already... I recently watched the movie Prayers for Bobby, and I was very moved by this story. The movie is based on the true story of Bobby Griffith and his family. In it Bobby experiences many challenges as he shares his life more completely. It is particularly challenging for Bobby to affirm his gay identity because his family vehemently believes that homosexuality is a sin, based on their religious teachings. His mother receives the news particularly hard and takes it on as her mission to help... Continue reading...

The recent suicidal deaths of several LGBTQ or perceived LGBTQ
individuals greatly sadden us at EqualityToledo. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families, friends
and loved ones of those individuals who have recently died. The recent news reports tell us about Billy
Lucas, 15, who hanged himself on 9/9/10 at his Indiana home after years of
reported harassment by students who judged him to be gay. Asher Brown, a 13-year-old in Harris,
TX, who had reportedly recently come out, took hi... Continue reading...

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
EqualityToledo is collaborating with RAY (Rainbow Area Youth, a support group for LGBTQ youth), to help alleviate some of the burden on their adult volunteers. They are in need of snack donations for their weekly Thursday evening meetings for 10 – 15 participants. Each week the young people are provided with snacks and for some of them, this may even be the only meal they receive. Snack ideas include: chips, salsa, crackers, animal crackers, popcorn, pretzels, fruit, vegetables, pop-tarts, granola bars, pizza, water, pop, juice, cups, plates, and utensils. All donations are welcome, but it would be preferable for some things to be individually packaged, such as cans of soda pop, bottled water, chips, pretzels, granola bars, etc. This is best to limit the spread of germs, or when a youth may need to take some food with them.
They are also in need of LGBTQ movies, books, and resources that you may have to add to their youth reference library. Magazines are the only thing they are not looking for as they already have plenty. They are also in need of phone cards for youth to use who need to make contact with others and are in fear of their family’s discovery.
If you are interested in donating any of these items, please contact us at info@equalitytoledo.org with the date and/or items you can donate. We can make arrangements to pick up the items.
Rainbow Area Youth (RAY) is also looking for adult volunteers to help co-facilitate and provide support for the local lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth. They are seeking individuals who are dedicated and passionate to working with LGBTQ youth. If you are interested in volunteering for RAY, it is a serious time commitment of a minimum of 6 months with the expectation of attending at least 2 meetings per month. The group meets every Wednesday from 6:30 pm until 9 pm. If you are interested, please contact the Shannon Frye, Executive Director of RAY at: phone number: (567) 249-7135 or email: toledo_ray@yahoo.com to complete an application, interview, and criminal background check.
Thank you for your assistance!
