Equality@Work: Ending Workplace Discrimination

By HRC Local Action Hero
Rev. Dr. Michelle Stecker

Did you know that most workers in Ohio and Michigan can legally be fired simply for being gay or lesbian?  It is wrong, not to mention un-American, that loyal, productive employees, working to provide the basic necessities for their families, can be fired for who they are, even when they are doing their jobs well.  Ready for some good news? Our Mission
EqualityToledo works for equality for all Ohioans regardless of their marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression, through education, anti-defamation efforts, and activism.

Our History
EqualityToledo began as a response to the passage of Ohio’s Issue 1 amendment in November 2004. The founding members were actively involved in opposing Issue 1 and educating our communities about the harmful consequences of its passage.

Despite the diligent efforts of numerous concerned citizens, the Issue 1 amendment became Article 15, Section 11, of the Ohio Constitution. It passed because of the lack of effective statewide coalitions in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community and its allies. EqualityToledo is our answer to this deficiency.

Our volunteer staff consists of talented organizers, ministers, educators, scholars, lawyers, business people, and activists who are determined to reframe the issues of our state to make visible the interests of all Ohioans, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and marital status.
EqualityToledo is working to end discrimination through education.
